Miracle at Mayesbrook 5th September 2002
Experienced thirty something player Billy Read had more to celebrate than his two goals against Soham Town Rangers last week. Since rejoining the Blues Billy has undergone an amazing rejuvenation which has halved his age, according to the Barking, Dagenham and Ilford Recorder. In its match report the Recorder refers to 16 year old teenager Billy Read. Is this a clever recruitment incentive organised by manager Richard Thomas? Sadly it appears that the explanation is more prosaic. The report sent to the press by United's press officer included references to Soham's 16 year old Lee Reed and some confusion seems to have ensued in the Recorder office, which also decided to Increase Banbury's travelling time by transferring them from the Eastern to Western Division of the Doctor Martens League.
FA Cup 4th September 2002
It’s Banbury!! The Blues have the chance to have their cake and eat it on September 14th after Banbury United beat Berkhamsted last night despite trailing 1-0 at half time. This victory was even more remarkable as Banbury have been plagued by Injury and had only nine fully fit players available with their substitutes comprising their manager, reserve team goalkeeper and two youth team players. Mattie Gooderich, leading scorer for the past three seasons, is out with a broken leg and two other players have recently had operations. On the plus side all four replay goals were scored by Norman Sylla. a Frenchman and brother In law of Ollvler Dacourt. The 19 year old Sylla. who is in his First season with Banbury has now scored five this season. Banbury are in the Doctor Martens Southern League Eastern Division which is the same pyramid level as the Blues. The club was formed in 1933, reformed in 1965 and is known as The Puritans. It was previously known as Banbury Spencer. The replay victory was only their second win in five games, the other being over Burnham. Banbury have been in the Southern League since 1966 and reached the F.A.Cup first round proper In 1947-8, 1961-2, 1972-3 and 1973-4. Replay If necessary this would be on Tuesday September 17th at 7.45.
