Grounds for improvement 24th May 2004

Chairman Peter Webster reports that annual restoration work on the pitch including re-seeding has already been completed. The new irrigation system now comes into operation and we are now watering extensively in the current dry spell. The pitch was, of course, in poor condition so that not all of the remedial work could be undertaken at the same time but we will be striving to ensure there is a good playing surface for next season. A volunteer ground force of supporters, under the direction of full time Manager Dennis Elliott, will be tackling appropriate cleaning and maintenance tasks during the summer.

The comfort and convenience of patrons in the Clubhouse is also being improved. We have installed a new projector and screen providing a dramatically improved picture and two televisions will be installed in the next week or two as well as new window blinds to provide blackout during day time screenings.

New sponsor update 24th May 2004

We are delighted to announce that the Football Club’s main sponsor for next season will be Star Bookmakers who operate a chain of betting shops in the area. Full details have yet to be finalised.

Back to the Blues 24th May 2004
We will be reverting next season to the Club's former colours of blue shirts and socks with white shorts.
Ladies Under 11's are just Champion 24th May 2004

Congratulations to the Ladies Under 11's B team who last Saturday were crowned champions of their section of the Hertfordshire Girl's League following a 2-1 win over Harpenden. Currently they are eight points clear of Harpenden their nearest rivals who were due to play their final game last Wednesday. Manager Dave Sale commented “The girls have played really well and have worked very hard during the season that has seen us lose just one game in the League at our first attempt."

Well done to every member of the team.

Supporters who are interested in forming a working party to begin the task of renovating Mayesbrook Park over the summer months are requested to be at the ground this Sunday morning May 16th at 10am. Breakfast will be provided and all work will be under the direction of Dennis Elliott and new Chairman Peter Webster will be getting his hands dirty !!
Change of ownership - full statement 12th May 2004
As promised previously here is the full official statement concerning the Club's change of ownership -
We are pleased to announce that the Company which has sponsored Barking and East Ham United Football Club for the last three seasons has completed a takeover of the Club. The first result is that Peter Webster, who has played senior football as a striker for Chingford Town and Woodford Town, has been appointed Chairman. Mr Webster has announced that manager Dennis Elliott will be employed by the Club in a full time capacity with responsibility for all football matters. Dennis rejoined the Club during the recently ended season at the instigation of Mr Webster, who was then Vice Chairman with responsibility for football matters. At that time Barking were firmly anchored at the bottom of the Ryman League Division 1 North with just one point from our first twelve games but, together with his management team of Jay Devereux and Terry Beck and the players he brought to the club plus the best of the previous squad, Dennis achieved the vital feat of avoiding relegation by overtaking Enfield, who were relegated to level five of the restructured pyramid. This was indeed remarkable because at one point we were ten points behind Enfield, despite having played five more games.
Commenting on the takeover and his plans Mr. Webster said: - “I am absolutely delighted to have completed the takeover following seven long months of negotiation. In my three years at Barking, I have come to appreciate that the Club has a long history as one of the leading non-league teams in the country and I consider myself privileged to have the opportunity to become Chairman and take the Club forward.  The primary aim next season will be to restructure the Club to operate on more professional lines whilst undertaking as many physical improvements as possible to the ground, pitch, members’ bar and function suites. It is absolutely essential that we build a solid foundation for the long term. Once this has been achieved, we can look to the future with optimism. There has been a lack of investment at the Club for some time and we need to improve the facilities and the quality of the playing surface. Work starts immediately this week with renovation of the pitch as part of the ongoing improvement programme and a new irrigation system comprising a 7,000 gallon water tank and automatic pumping equipment will soon be completed. We will renew our floodlights and boundary wall with the aid of a Football Stadium Improvement Grant from the Football Foundation , although the Club will need to provide a substantial contribution to the cost. There is a tremendous amount of hard work to be done by everybody at the club but we have a very exciting season to look forward to. I am extremely grateful to Dennis Elliott, his staff and players for their superb run of results during the latter part of the season, enabling us to avoid relegation. As a result, we will be playing in the Southern League Division 1 East at level four of the pyramid and against some teams for the first time in our 124 year history. Finally, a thank you to all the wonderful people at the Club who have supported my takeover and provided assistance and encouragement along the way. I will do my utmost to repay them by bringing the Club future success”
Change of League 12th May 2004
After 52 years of membership of the Isthmian League we, together with several other clubs, will transfer to the Southern League Division 1 East next season as a result of the restructuring. We will meet two clubs whom we have never played during our 124 year history – Chatham Town and Southall Town, although we played the old Southall FC many times We will be renewing old rivalry with Erith and Belvedere and playing regularly against clubs previously only met in cups - Beaconsfield SYCOB, Dartford, Fisher Athletic, Maldon Town The full breakdown of the league and where the Clubs played last season is:-

Ryman League Division 1 North - Arlesey Town, Aveley, Barking & East Ham United, Barton Rovers, Berkhamsted Town, Boreham Wood, East Thurrock United, Great Wakering Rovers, Harlow Town, Tilbury, Uxbridge, Waltham Forest, Wingate & Finchley, Wivenhoe Town.

Ryman League Division 2 - Leighton Town

Southern League Eastern Division - Chatham Town, Dartford, Erith & Belvedere, Fisher Athletic

Spartan South Midland League Premier Division - Beaconsfield SYCOB

Eastern Counties League Premier Division - Maldon Town

Hellenic League Premier Division - Southall Town

Relegation/Promotion clarification 12th May 2004
The Non League paper reports that the arbitration panel failed to reach a decision on the Ryman League’s appeal against next season’s restructuring and deliberations were continuing. No date has been set for the decision but the paper expects a verdict by Thursday.
Reserves end of season statement 12th May 2004
Lionel Meade Manager of the Reserve Team has made the following end-of-season statement:-
"I have learned of Waltham Abbey and Dagenham sharing the points on Saturday 1st May 2004 (2-2) which effectively means that the Reserves avoided finishing in the bottom three and 'relegation' from the Premier Division. Bert Hoyte (Assistant Manager) and I are delighted and when one takes into consideration the bottom position that the Reserves occupied when we took charge in November 2003, we are delighted with the end result. We were fairly confident that if we could take at least seven points from our last three games, Waltham Abbey would be faced with a hard task to win their last three games. There was a suspicion that we had blown it when conceding the penalty in our last match against Dagenham, with just 30 seconds of the match left, but overall it was a very satisfying result. We have undoubtedly suffered through injuries this season, not too mention facing a number of sides who fielded several first team players. In comparison, we have fielded virtually reserve team players for most of the season. With the first team fighting relegation, we could not afford the luxury of drafting in first team players. The expectation levels for next season has already been conveyed to the players and they know, with the possible exception of Canvey Island, there is no team to fear in the division.
A special thanks to Len Beresford for all his support from the turn of the year"

We have not been relegated 9th May 2004
The Club has heard that following this afternoon's meeting we will not be relegated despite finishing second from bottom in this season's campaign - only Enfield have been relegated. Next season we will compete in the same Division as Erith & Belvedere, Beaconsfield SYCOB and Fisher Athletic from the Doctor Martens league along with other Essex clubs. This news is just reward for the efforts of Dennis Elliott, Jay Devereux, Terry Beck and all of the players who worked so hard to get us off the bottom of the league and to the Essex Thameside Trophy Final. More news will appear here as it becomes known.
