| Ladies anger at FA sponsorship 6th January 2003 |
|
Over the Christmas break Barking Ladies were very unhappy at the sponsorship package which has been announced in conjunction with one of their major partners Nationwide. The five major partners which work with the FA provide a sum of money which is then put in particular areas and can then be spent on projects that the FA see fit. The FA announced that £750,000 is to be divided amongst the 72 Mens Football League Clubs that play in the Nationwide Football League, to be used on encouraging more Women and Girls to get involved in football through taster sessions, local Womens and Girls Club and even put towards a full time Development Officer for Women and Girls Football. The amount available to each club is £10,416.66 Barking Secretary Paul Glibbery was delighted to see so much money being spent on Women's and Girls Football but furious that the Women's Clubs playing the Women's Premier League have been totally ignored, again. Glibbery said "The 33 Clubs that play in the FANationwide Premier League see some clubs connected to Men's clubs like ourselves and Barking F.C., and others that are totally independent such as Doncaster Belles. If you wanted to breakdown the teams 13 are connected to Mens FAPremier League Clubs, 10 to Nationwide Football League Clubs and 10 to either Clubs outside the Football League or are independent. The ten clubs who are connected to Football League Clubs will see a slice of the cake but why are the others all left out, are we doing nothing to promote Women and Girls Football ??. Of course some of the Women's Teams connected to FA Premier League Clubs such as Fulham, Arsenal already receive varying forms of financial assistance from their male counterparts, but the "little" clubs like us, Langford, Oldham Curzon, Bangor City, Merthyr Tydfil, Ilkeston Town, Garswood Saints, Doncaster Belles, Barnet and Enfield are all ignored. We had the same problem when Centres of Excellence were introduced, as licences were only issued to Men's Professional Clubs. This has now been rescinded and the "little" clubs can now apply, but we will be refused as London has ample Centres Of Excellence. If the FA had included the 23 non Football League Clubs in the payout, everybody would have received £7895 which would have been an enormous sum which we could have made fantastic use of. I have no doubt some of the Men's Teams will take the money, hand out a few hundred tickets to schoolgirls, get their community officer to put a couple of sessions, then bank the rest to go towards their debts run up through poor financial management. How many Football League Clubs would have been disappointed in £7,895 rather that £10,416, very few !!!! Karen Doyle, Head of Women's Football did reply the next day verbally to my letter, but could only talk about how wonderful the deal was, and not the issue of why we are left out. It seems to me the FA are determined somehow to get rid of "little" Clubs and have the likes of Manchester United, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur all playing in the FA Nationwide Women's Premier League, along with the cream of the FA Nationwide Football League."
