Thameside Trophy date confirmed 28th December 2004

Our Essex Thameside Trophy second round match away to Eton Manor (to be played at Tilbury FC) has been confirmed for Wednesday January 26th.

Player news 28th December 2004

Ebow Mensah missed the game at Waltham Forest due to his ankle injury.

London Senior Cup reprieve 24th December 2004

Club secretary Mike Roberts has advised that we have today been informed that Bromley have been disqualified from the London Senior Cup for fielding an ineligible player and we have been re-instated. We will now visit the winners of Thamesmead Town or Waltham Abbey (scheduled to play January 11th) in the fourth round with a home quarter final tie against Tooting & Mitcham United awaiting the winners. The well supported AFC Wimbledon are still in the competition but face Fisher Athletic also on January 11th.

Player news 24th December 2004

Tony Tucker has been advised by club physiotherapist Donna Read to consult an osteopath about the back injury which prevented him playing against Bromley on Tuesday evening. Tony thinks that the injury was exacerbated at work – literally an occupational hazard for semi-professional players. With the Christmas break he has six days to recover before the next game at Waltham Forest on December 27th. Tony notified club manager Dennis Elliott on Tuesday morning that he had injured his back but unfortunately no other goalkeeper was available . Robin Ruston is working away as the Reserves have no fixtures until January and Sam Whitby and Chris Harvey, who have also played for the Reserves this season, are no longer with the club. Mark Parker is recovering from a broken arm and current Under 18 ‘keeper Danny Wiley was ineligible. As the county cups still have long registration periods (in this case seven days prior to the date of the match) it was impossible to register Danny in time to play. It was left to Ryan Quincey to willingly take on the task of filling Tucker's role and acquitted himself well in the process

Also missing on Tuesday was Bradley Woodards who was ill, along with John Morgan (ill) and b Mensah (ankle injury).

On a happier note, Assistant Manager Jay Devereux’s presence on the bench against Bromley was his 70th appearance in a blue shirt while Gregg Thompson was making his 60th.

Cup update 22nd December 2004

Our last cup of the season is the Essex Thameside Trophy, in which we were runners up last season. We are away to Eton Manor, who play at Tilbury, in the second round and they have suggested Wednesday January 26th for this match. This date awaits confirmation.

Chairman's message 20th December 2004

Chairman Peter Webster has asked that his message from Saturday's programme be repeated here:-

I am very conscious that the Club has a potentially significant role to play in the local community and I am committed to developing closer working relationships with Barking & Dagenham Council, local schools and community groups as well as providing sporting opportunities for a wide range of age groups including those with disabilities and from ethnic minorities.

At the present time, the Club has a well established ladies football section with teams from the very young to adults. Men's football is currently centered around the first and reserve teams and our successful Under 18 team. With the kind help of our sponsors Property Facilities Group plc, we now have plans next  year to establish an Under 16 team as well as providing coaching and training for younger age groups with the ultimate intention of establishing teams at all levels.

Our efforts have been recognised by the Government's Business Sponsorship Incentive Scheme for Sport and Physical Recreation by way of a Sportsmatch award of £4,000 which will ensure our programmes can be progressed to the required standard, without delay as well as fully involving the local community. As a result of this award, the local Member of Parliament, Margaret Hodge will be visiting the Club shortly to meet Dennis and myself in order to discuss our future plans including our role within the community.

Local schools are a key area for us to develop ongoing relationships and whilst this will certainly include sporting links, we have also made a financial commitment to support the Kidsafe project within a number of schools. The project provides support and advice for children in areas such as stranger danger, vandalism and crime prevention, racism, bullying, drugs and road safety. I will let you know more about this scheme as our involvement progresses.

Whilst we are primarily a football club, I do not overlook that our community contacts extend to our Members Club where children are welcome and the use of our halls for groups as diverse as karate (both for children and adults), aerobics, weight watchers, the pigeon and disabled anglers groups, big band practice and religious organisations. Details of membership of any of these groups can be provided on request.

We have a very long way to go to achieve my aim of making an important contribution to the community which has been so supportive of the Club of over the years but I believe we have made worthwhile progress in the six months since I became Chairman and I look forward to the challenges which lie ahead.

If you would like to discuss any aspects of our community programme or wish to become directly involved, please feel free to contact me at the Club, at any time.

Best wishes

Peter Webster

We've got the best defence in the land 20th December 2004

With sixteen goals conceded in 21 league games (24 in 30 in all games) we have the best defensive record in the country at our level (88 clubs). Closest challengers are Gresley Rovers – only conceded thirteen but in only nineteen games- and Evesham 17 in 21. We also have the best record of all 66 Southern League clubs and out of the 154 clubs nationally at Premier and Division 1 level there is only one better defensive record, held by Workington, who top the Unibond Northern Premier league Premier Division having conceded thirteen in 23 games.

Player news 20th December 2004

John Morgan missed the Tilbury game due to illness from which he should have recovered in time to be available for selection for the post- Christmas games.

Ebow Mensah is still incapacitated by his ankle injury but hopes to be fit and available for selection for the post-Christmas games.

Assistant Manager Jay Devereux hobbled off with a painful leg injury after suffering a heavy tackle in the Tilbury game and we do not yet know how serious the injury is. Typically Jay, despite the pain, battled on long enough to score an excellent equaliser before accepting the inevitable.

Michael Gorman has completed his three match suspension.

Good news of Under 18 goalkeeper Mark Parker, who has had his plaster removed from his broken arm and will train this week

John O’Sullivan made his 175th appearance for us on Saturday and looked as fresh as on his pony tailed debut as a 19 year old during Manager Dennis Elliott’s previous tenure.

Other recent appearance landmarks were Billy Read’s 150th appearance (45 goals), Ashley Marsh’s 180th, Ben Willis’s 125th, Gary Waters’s 60th and Robin Ruston’s 50th.

Cup update 20th December 2004

The winners of tomorrow nights London Senior Cup third round tie versus Bromley will have to wait until at least January 11th for the identity of their fourth round (last sixteen) away opponents as that is the scheduled date for Thamesmead Town to play Waltham Abbey. The winners of that have an attractive home quarter final draw against Tooting & Mitcham United

Success against Concord Rangers Reserves in the Essex Premier Cup would give our Reserves an away quarter final at Takeley or White Ensign on February 12th. If we beat Chelmsford City Reserves in the Fred Budden Trophy we will have a seaside trip to look forward to in the semi final as Concord Rangers Reserves won the penalty competition 6-5 to eliminate East Thurrock United Reserves after a 1-1 draw.

Our Under 18s have an interesting Essex FA Pelly Cup fourth round (last sixteen) tie away to Campus Wanderers or Redbridge United, which is a different club from Redbridge FC, who are also still in the competition.

Player news 13th December 2004

Ashley Marsh and Jay Devereux are available again following their one game suspensions but Michael Gorman is still suspended for Saturday’s fixture against Tilbury.

Ebow Mensah sustained a badly swollen ankle at Boreham Wood but it is not yet known whether he will be fit for Saturday.

Management news - Honorary Secretary 13th December 2004

We are happy to announce the return of another former Blue but not to the playing squad this time. Mike Roberts, who was secretary from 1988 to 1993, has volunteered to return to this onerous unpaid post to fill the current vacancy. Mike has been helping the club since the vacancy recently occurred.

Player news 9th December 2004
Congratulations to popular young goalkeeper Robin Ruston, who started the season with the Reserves but is now shadowing Tony Tucker on the senior substitutes bench and clocked up his 50th senior appearance for Barking in the Thurrock match. He has also made many senior appearances for Romford.
Reserves news 7th December 2004

We are delighted to welcome the return of another former Blue as Goalkeeper Chris Harvey has been signed for the Reserves by Manager Tony Myers. Chris kept a clean sheet in the 5-0 victory over Harold Wood Athletic on Saturday.

Latest cup draws for the Reserves are :-

Essex Saturday Premier Cup - Fourth Round - Concord Rangers, date and venue to be confirmed

Fred Budden Trophy - Second Round - Home to Chelmsford City, date to be confirmed.

Striker signed 6th December 2004

Dennis Elliott has signed an experienced striker in the shape of Warren Haughton from Lewes, where he scored 14 goals in 21 games since joining them from Dulwich Hamlet in January 2004. Warren started his career with Leicester City, before plying his trade with Stourbridge, VS Rugby, Stafford Rangers, Sutton Coldfield and Tamworth. While at Tamworth in 1999 he scored in two FA Cup ties against Bury. A move to London meant a change of club and he joined Woking for season 2001-02 before joining Havant & Waterlooville before his move to Dulwich in August 2003.

Warren demonstrated his polished predatory skills with an exquisite goal on his debut on Saturday against East Thurrock United.

Suspension update 6th December 2004

We have three players currently serving suspensions. Ashley Marsh and Jay Devereux are suspended for one game from December 7th but unfortunately the Essex Senior Cup does not count (but suspended players cannot participate), as the London F A is our “parent “ association, so they will miss Tuesday’s tie against Thurrock and Saturday’s vital league match at Boreham Wood. Similarly Michael Gorman, suspended for three games from December 4th, will actually miss four games.

Ground news 6th December 2004

Despite suffering some repeated damage from vandalism, planning permission has been granted for the new perimeter wall and work is due to start in January.

Injury update 3rd December 2004

Mark Parker, our Under 18’s Goalkeeper who is suffering from a broken arm, will have his plaster removed next Thursday. Subsequent progress will depend on what the Doctor finds following this removal.
