September 14th - BASIL 'DONE'

Real disappointment here, resilient opponents did a job on us and probably just about deserved to shade a scrappy encounter. We did match one of this season's pacesetters for majority of the game but that's as positive as it gets, carried none of the goal threat from last week’s sparkling win and in the end literally handed Basildon the three points.

Some grumbles about the goal, but in hindsight maybe the lino got it right, referee very well placed and says corner but decision giving by official much further away. On another day we get away with that and it's a hard fought point against well organised opponents, not to be Saturday and now the Bee's have psychological advantage going into next week’s crunch Vase tie.

My main point about the goal is the if ref gives the penalty for handball, the linesman would not flag and say it didn't hit the hand, there were two different opinions and I believe the ref should have gone with his own on this occasion, he was better paced to judge any intent.

Takes nothing away from Basildon, will give teams problems this year, no frills but effective as we expected them to be. Celebrated loudly at the end and I don't blame them for that, hope the lad's heard it and put it in the memory banks for next week, it's our backyard and we need to be aggressive towards visiting teams, too many of the lads too nice at the moment, need to get nastier and forge winning mentality.

Southend Manor Tuesday night, straight away chance to bounce back, will ring the changes but want to win every game so won't be just making up the numbers. Chance for fringe players to push themselves into the frame, want players desperate to play so will be looking at attitude and desire just as much as talent. Need winners at this club so hopefully unearth a few more on the night.
